Poet in Residence: Daljit Nagra
Southlands are pleased to welcome nationally and internationally acclaimed poet Daljit Nagra to the Arts Centre for a year long poetry residency, which will see him create new work inspired by the local area, offer workshops and one to one guidance for aspiring local poets and perform some public readings.

Daljit grew up very close to Southlands in Yiewsley and still lives in West London. His poetry is nationally respected and he has won and been nominated for a number of major poetry prizes, including wins for the prestigious Forward Prize for Best Individual Poem and Best First Collection.

‘I am so excited to be returning to very roads where I grew up and spent so much of formative life’, he says. ‘I have so many happy memories of West Drayton and I can’t wait to meet and work with the budding poets of the area. I also look forward to sharing my work especially as so much of its creative roots are based around the parks, lanes and houses of West London.’

Daljit’s work is set reading on the GCSE and A Level syllabus, and as part of his residency here at Southlands he will be returning to his own school, Stockley Academy (formerly Evelyns School) to share some of his work and his experiences as a writer with pupils there.

As well as being a poet, Daljit is also a respected teacher, regularly leading courses for the Faber Academy and the internationally respected Arvon Foundation.

Daljit’s residency at Southlands is funded by the Arts Champion for the London Borough of Hillingdon, Cllr Judy Kelly. The Centre is grateful for this generous support.
